Pioneers close road trip with 6-1 loss at North Georgia

DAHLONEGA, Ga. --- The Tusculum University men's tennis team wrapped up its two-day road trip to Georgia with a 6-1 loss to the University of North Georgia Monday afternoon.

The Pioneers (3-2) lost the doubles point, but won at least one set in five of the six singles matches contested. Tusculum's lone win against the Nighthawks (4-1) came at flight four singles where Vadzim Raitsou beat Hugues Renaud 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-2).

North Georgia won all three doubles matches to take the team point, then went up 2-0 as Niklas Zielen beat Yago Fernandez 6-3, 6-2 at flight two of singles. At flight one, David Akinpetide went up a set in his match, but saw North Georgia's Jess Jones come back for a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 win. At flight three, the Nighthawks' Ryan Gaskin went back and forth with the Pioneers' Manuel Guedes de Almeida before holding on for a 6-4, 0-6, 6-4 victory.

Raitsou's win brought the Pioneers within 4-1 in the match, but the Nighthawks won the final two singles points as Jared Bones and Tim Kiehl each won 10-5 in a tiebreaker in their respective matches. Bones beat Gabriel Yaguar at flight five after splitting the first two sets 3-6 and 6-2, while Kiehl rallied at flight six to beat Tim Klee as the first two sets went 4-6 and 6-3.

Tusculum will begin a stretch of three straight home matches on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at the Nichols Tennis Complex against Lee.
