Akinpetide upsets #5 singles player in DII as Pioneers fall 4-3 to #9 Indianapolis

LEXINGTON, Ky. --- The Tusculum University men's tennis team battled 9th-ranked University of Indianapolis on Friday before the Greyhounds were able to come away with a 4-3 victory over the Pioneers.

The Greyhounds (4-0) swept doubles to earn the team point, but were taken to three sets in four of the six singles matches by the Pioneers (2-1), with Tusculum winning three of them.

In doubles, the sixth-ranked duo of Dario Huber and Matej Kostadinov beat Gabriel Yaguar and Tim Klee 6-3 at flight one, Renato Lima and Magnus Mueller beat David Akinpetide and Yago Fernandez 6-3 at flight two, and Nils Hoffacker and Ariel Farji beat Manuel Almeida and Jacco Mensinga 6-1 at flight three.

In singles play, Akinpetide pulled the upset at flight one as he defeated Lima, who was ranked fifth in Division II following the fall season by the ITA, by a score of 6-2, 0-6, 7-6 (8-6). Yaguar also took a three-set win, defeating Farji 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) at flight five, while Marco Meon edged Kostadinov in a 10-8 tiebreaker after splitting the first two sets 6-4, 0-6.

For the Greyhounds, Huber beat Almeida 6-2, 6-3 at flight two, 32nd-ranked Hoffacker was a 6-2, 6-3 winner at flight three over Fernandez, and Mueller won 2-6, 6-0, 6-2 over Vadzim Raitsou at flight four.

Tusculum will be back on the court Saturday, Feb. 23 at North Georgia for an 11 a.m. match.
