Pioneers blank Virginia-Wise 7-0 in home opener

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The Tusculum University men's tennis team blanked the University of Virginia-Wise 7-0 in non-conference action Saturday afternoon, in the first match played on the renovated courts at the Nichols Tennis Complex.

The Pioneers (2-0) lost just three games, all in singles, and had four shutout wins among their six singles victories over the Cavaliers (0-5).

Tusculum won all three doubles matches by identical 6-0 scores, as Gabriel Yaguar and Tim Klee beat Coleton Burke and Luke Jarnigan at flight one, Jacco Mensinga and Milan Jankovic defeated Dominic Hoffman and John Hamilton at flight two, and Fabian Paier and Manuel Almeida won over Daniel Laughlin and Jakub Blach at flight three.

In singles action, Marco Meon shut out Burke 6-0, 6-0 at flight one, Paier defeated Hoffman 6-0, 6-1 at flight two and Mensinga earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory at flight three over Jarnigan. The remainder of the singles matches finished 6-0, 6-0 in favor of Tusculum, with Klee beating Hamilton at flight four, Gaston Aguilera winning over Laughlin at flight five, and Rafael Sarasola victorious over Blach at flight six.

Tusculum will head to Lexington, Kentucky on Friday, Feb. 15 to face Indianapolis in a match that will begin at noon.
