Devens scores twice as Pioneers beat Catawba, 4-0

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Two first-half goals by Henrique Devens sparked Tusculum University to a 4-0 victory over Catawba College in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action at Pioneer Field Saturday night.

Fabian Proesch and Ayuk Tambe added second-half goals for the Pioneers (3-5-0, 1-2-0 SAC), who snapped a five-match losing streak by outshooting the Indians (1-7-0, 0-5-0 SAC) by a 16-8 margin. The four-goal victory was the largest for the Pioneers since a 5-1 win at Mars Hill on Oct. 17, 2015.

Devens scored in the 15th and 25th minutes for the Pioneers, while the defense did not allow a shot attempt for the Indians until the 67th minute. Alejandro Quiriti needed to make just one save to earn his third shutout of the season and the fourth of his Tusculum career.

The first shot of the game ended up in the Catawba net, as Devens collected a feed from the defensive end by Mathias Grimsted and beat keeper Gianluca Tommasi for his second goal of the season at 14:26.

Devens followed up just under 10 minutes later by taking a short through pass from Dario Ljubic and going to the far post against Tommasi at 24:11, giving Tusculum a 2-0 lead.

The Pioneers nearly went ahead 3-0 in the 32nd minute as a free kick from 35 yards by Oscar Rubio Jimenez caromed off the crossbar. Eight minutes later, Jonny Winter deflected a cross over the frame from close range.

Tusculum had a chance for an unconventional goal in the 53rd minute as a loose ball was grabbed by Tommasi, then knocked out of his hands and toward the Catawba goal before being cleared away by Andrew Twamley. The Indians had their first shot attempt of the game in the 67th minute as Borja Gaspar fired high of Quiriti.

The Pioneers extended their lead to 3-0 with 20:44 remaining as Proesch drilled a free kick from 25 yards for his first goal of the season.

After the goal, Catawba began to apply pressure on the Tusculum goal, as Jeff Rafter put their only shot on goal with 12:02 remaining.

The Pioneers tacked on their fourth goal with 2:47 to play when Tambe collected a pass from Endjick Albert, split the defense and beat Tommasi for his third goal of the year.

Catawba nearly spoiled the shutout with less than 15 seconds remaining when Hunter Faust hit the post on a free kick and Michael Nuquse sent the rebound high over the goal.

The Pioneers finished the game with a 6-2 edge in corner kicks, and were called for 20 fouls to 10 by the Indians. Tommasi ended the match with three saves in goal for Catawba.

Tusculum will make the short trip to Jefferson City to face rival Carson-Newman on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
