Pioneers, Wolves split doubleheader, weekend series

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum's Daalen Adderley belted two home runs including a grand slam in the second game as the seventh-ranked Pioneers split a South Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader with visiting Newberry Monday afternoon at Pioneer Park.

Newberry used a six-run inning to rally from a three-run deficit en route to a 10-6 victory in Monday's first game. Tusculum bounced back with an 11-2 win in the second game as the two teams split the four-game weekend series.

The Pioneers move to 19-6 overall and 15-5 in league play to remain one-game ahead of second place Wingate. Newberry goes to 11-8 overall and 8-3 in SAC action.

Game 1: Newberry 10, No. 7 Tusculum 6

Jack Harris went 3-for-5 at the plate for the Wolves and Zane Tarrance went 2-for-3 with three RBI as Newberry won 10-6. Matthew Campbell (3-1) pitched five strong innings, while Christopher Osment scattered three hits and a run in his two innings on the mound.

The Wolves finished with 11 hits including three in Newberry's six-run, fifth frame as the visitors took sent 10 batters to the plate as NBY erased a 5-2 deficit and resulting in an 8-5 lead after the inning. Tarrence's two-run double highlighted the fifth inning for the Wolve.

Adderley and Murphy Flood hit back-to-back home runs in the third inning for a 5-2 Tusculum advantage before Newberry made its strong push. TU finished with eight hits on the day. Reliever Sam Loew suffered the loss as he went 0.2 innings where he allowed four runs. Flood led the TU offense with his 3-for-3 effort, while Bryson Ford tallied two hits on the day.

Game 2: No. 7 Tusculum 11, Newberry 2

Adderley's grand slam in the third inning gave the Pioneers the lead for good in an 11-2 victory.  TU got 10 hits, 11 walks and five stolen bases including two from Kyle Williams as he went 2-for-4 on the day.

Trailing 1-0 heading to the third, Daulton Martin reached on a one-out single and Bryson Ford and Brandon Trammell each walked to load the bases. Adderley stepped up homered down the left field line for a 4-1 TU lead, one that the Pioneers would not surrender.

TU added two runs in the fifth inning and scored four times in the seventh to put the game out of reach, including Chase Wulleweber's two-run double to left.

TU starter Tyler Harmon (2-1) picked up the win as he went 5.1 innings, allowed five hits, two runs, walked five and fanned four in his 97-pitch performance. For the remainder of the game, Tusculum hurlers Mitch McCain, Trevor Lloyd and Jonathan Nelson blanked Wolves over the final three innings

The Pioneers return to action on Wednesday when they are scheduled to host nationally-ranked Lee University at Pioneer Park.
