Furr homers three times in DH sweep over Mars Hill

MARS HILL, N.C. --- The Tusculum Pioneers scored 16 runs in each game as Fuzzy Furr belted three home runs and finished with nine RBI on the day in a South Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader sweep over host Mars Hill Saturday afternoon at Henderson Field.

Tusculum erupted for a nine-run, third inning en route to a 16-4 victory in the opener. The Pioneers tallied 13 hits including two homers by Furr in TU's 16-8 victory in the night-cap as Tusculum (9-1, 6-0 SAC) has won eight in a row and remain undefeated in league play.  The Pioneers have scored 10 or more runs in eight of their first 10 games including the last five in a row.

Game 1: Tusculum 16, Mars Hill 4

Furr went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and four RBI in the Pioneers' 16-4 victory over Mars Hill.

Tusculum accounted for nine hits and seven walks as all nine starters scored at least one run in the contest.

TU starting pitcher Gunner Becker tossed his second straight complete game to improve to 3-0 on the season.

Mars Hill took the early 1-0 lead in its first at-bat as the Lions took advantage to a pair of walks, a stolen base and a wild pitch.

The Pioneers answered with four runs in the top of the second inning including Furr's two-run blast to center field and Chase Wullenweber's RBI double. Kyle Williams drove in the fourth-run of the inning with a sacrifice fly.

Tusculum sent 12 batters to the plate in the third inning as the Pioneers scored nine times on just two hits on Furr's two-run double and Luis Ezra's three-run double as Tusculum led 13-1.

MHU's Ruben Trillo led off the bottom of the inning with a solo blast to left field and scored twice in the fourth to make it a 13-4 game. But Tusculum added three runs in the sixth and Becker retired the Lions in order in the sixth as the Pioneers won via the 10-run rule.

Becker held Mars Hill to four hits, four walks and posted three strikeouts. MHU starter AJ Chacon (2-1) suffered his first loss of 2021.

Game 2: Tusculum 16, Mars Hill 8

Furr drove in five runs, while Wullenweber went 2-for-3 with four RBI as Tusculum won the second game, 16-8 to complete the series opening sweep.

TU's Jaden Steagall went 2-for-3 with three walks, while Furr and Ezra scored three times each.

Tusculum starter Nick Flesher improved to 2-0 as he tossed six innings with four strikeouts.

Furr got the scoring started in the second inning with his two-run homer to right field. Wullenweber later doubled in a right to highlight a four-run inning. MHU got a run in the bottom of the frame as Chad Sikes hit a two-out RBI double to make it a 4-1 game.

Furr belted his second homer of the game and third of the day with a three-run blast to give TU a 7-1 advantage. Austin Purser drove in two runs with his two-out double in the bottom of the third as the Pioneers lead was cut to 7-3.

Tusculum plated two runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth to extend the lead to 11-3. MHU answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but TU scored three times in the sixth and two more in the ninth to put the game out of reach.

The two teams will wrap up the four-game SAC series with Sunday's doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
