GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The Alabama Huntsville baseball team scored four runs in the second inning and five more in the third as the Chargers led wire-to-wire in an 11-5 win at Tusculum Wednesday afternoon at Pioneer Park.
The Chargers (14-8) utilized five hits and five walks in the second and third frames to jump out to the 9-0 lead. The Pioneers (15-10) have its nine-game home winning streak snapped as TU falls to 9-1 at home this year.
Colin Brewer led UAH with his 3-for-5 performance while scoring three times as he was the only Charger with a multiple-hit game. UAH's Dorien Jenkins drew three walks while Nolan Ramsey finished with three RBI.
The Pioneers out-hit the Chargers by an 11-8 margin but Tusculum left 12 runner on base. Seth DeHaven posted three hits, while Jarel McDade and Chase Wullenweber had two hits apiece.
UAH reliever Dustin Sharp (2-1) earned the victory going 1.1 hitless innings with one strikeout as he was one of six Chargers to take the mound on Wednesday. TU starter Alec Lay suffered the loss for the Pioneers going 1.2 innings with three hits, four runs, three walks and one strikeout.
Ten batters went to the plate for the Chargers in the second inning as Brett Barbee had a RBI single and Malave Bettinger had a RBI when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Nolan Ramsey followed with a walk with the bases juiced. In the third inning, Garrett Bodine doubled off the wall in left field to drive in two runs, while Ramsey had a single to drive in two more.
TU's Nate Montgomery put the Pioneers on the board with his solo blast to left field off of UAH starter Harper Case. Case left the game in the fifth inning as the got back-to-back singles from Wullenweber and DeHaven and Jaden Steagall was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Daulton Martin. Martin responded with a two-run double off the wall for his NCAA Division II leading 16th two-bagger of the season.
UAH added a run in the seventh but Tusculum responded with a run in the bottom of the frame but left the bases loaded. The Chargers scored an unearned run in the ninth to provide the final margin.
Tusculum will host Queens University of Charlotte this weekend for a three-game South Atlantic Conference series beginning with Friday night's opener at 6 p.m.
