GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum University attack Keegan Bell and guard Mia Long have been named the Zaxby's Athletes of the Week. Long earns her third Athlete of the Week honor while Bell garners his second weekly accolade.
Bell had a pair of six-goal games as the Pioneers extended their winning streak to five in a row with wins over Mars Hill (15-13) and Barton (22-12). Bell also had a pair of assists in the win over Barton on Saturday, while in the victory against Mars Hill on Wednesday he became the fifth player in program history to reach 100 career points.
The senior from Port Coquitlam, British Columbia is tied for the South Atlantic Conference lead in points with 35 and is second in the conference in goals with 25. After eclipsing the 100-point mark, Bell ranks fifth in program history in both goals (69) and points (110).
Long scored 17 of her game-high 22 points in the second half and had a team-high eight rebounds in a 53-47 loss at Wingate in the South Atlantic Conference Women's Basketball Championship quarterfinals on Wednesday night. The junior from Ann Arbor, Michigan scored 10 straight points during a run that gave the Pioneers a five-point lead midway through the third quarter, then scored seven in a row as the Pioneers went up seven with 7 1/2 minutes remaining.
On Thursday, Long was named second-team All-SAC and SAC Defensive Player of the Year in voting by the conference's head coaches. Long ranks second in NCAA Division II in steals per game at 3.96 per game and finished the season with 107 steals to rank second on the Tusculum single-season list.
