Pioneer men place second, women fourth at Tusculum Open
 
GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The Tusculum men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2017 season by hosting the Tusculum Open at the Holston United Methodist Home For Children cross country course Friday evening.
 
The Pioneer men had two top-10 individual finishers and placed second out of seven teams, while the Tusculum women were second out of six teams on the 5-kilometer Holston Home course.
 
Tusculum will be back in action next Friday night in the Lenoir-Rhyne Invitational in Newton, North Carolina.
 
MEN'S RESULTS
Freshman Zac Branham finished seventh for the Pioneers with a time of 16:23.6, and was joined in the top 10 by fellow freshman Jackson Beason who was ninth in 16:30.7. A third freshman, Will Cronin, took 12th place overall with a time of 16:56.8, while senior Jacob Cutshall turned in a time of 17:36.4 and finished in 19th.
 
The Pioneers' fifth finisher was freshman Mason Snelson, who was timed at 17:40.1 and placed 22nd overall. Other Pioneer finishers were junior J'Quen Johnson in 25th place (17:57.4), freshman Alex Haffcke in 31st place (18:24.5), junior Will Noel in 32nd place (18:55.7) and freshman Isaac Hybarger in 44th place (20:51.2).
 
Lincoln Memorial had four top-10 finishers and won the team title with 38 points, followed by Tusculum (65), Carson-Newman (69), North Greenville (71), Brevard (143), Maryville (160) and Johnson (196). Luke Greer of Carson-Newman was the individual winner with a time of 15:38.5, finishing 14 seconds ahead of runner-up Ayden Farmer of Lincoln Memorial.
 
WOMEN'S RESULTS
Sophomore Alissa Furches finished fourth for the Pioneers with a time of 20:54.5, with four other teammates placing in the top 20. Junior Mackenzie Newsome was 12th in 21:32.9, followed in 13th by freshman Paige Roberts with a time of 21:34.1. Freshman Hayden Fobare took 17th in 21:57.6, and sophomore Brooklyn Smith was the fifth finisher for the Pioneers in 19th place at 22:13.3.
 
Other Pioneer finishers were sophomore Makenzi Alley in 24th place at 23:05.5, sophomore Katie MacDonald in 27th place at 23:53.7, freshman Angel Quay in 31st place at 24:46.1, junior Deondra Thomas in 34th place at 25:25.0, and sophomore Brittany Bowery in 46th place at 33:14.7.
 
Lincoln Memorial had the top three finishers to win the team championship with 54 points, with Whitney Elliott covering the course in 19:27.8 to defeat teammate Tabea Kandlebauer by just over one full minute. North Greenville had five runners in the top 20 and placed a close second with 56 points, followed by Carson-Newman (60), Tusculum (65), Johnson (122) and Maryville (123).
