Holzapfel wins, Smith finishes second at Camp Bethel Open

WISE, Va. --- Tusculum College junior Simon Holzapfel won his third race of the season, and senior harrier Robin Smith finished second in the Women's race at the UVA-Wise Open Saturday.

Holzapfel turned in a 5k time of 15:56, finishing the race nearly two minutes ahead of second-place runner Spencer Adams of UVA-Wise (17:30). Virginia Wise's Alex Gragg finished third with a time of 17:59, followed by TC's David Parham's fourth-place time of 18:21. Tusculum's Ben Hale (19:25) and Elvis Machado (20:44) finished seventh and eighth, respectively. Tyler Rogers and Jason Seaton rounded out the race for the Pioneers in 10th and 11 th place with times of 24:18 and 25:01, respectively.

Smith finished the Women's race just 14 seconds behind Virgina Wise's Mary Katherine Phipps, crossing the line with a time of 21:53. Kayla Balthis and Leslie Hitt of UVA-Wise finished third and fourth, respectively, while Tusculum's Katie Shelton crossed the line in fifth place with a time of 22:56. Tusculum's Jessica Figler finished the race in sixth place with a time of 26:30, as TC harriers Kelsey Longwell (27:04), Josie Honaker (27:31) and Estefania Chavez (30:39) rounded out the event in eighth, ninth, and 10th place, respectively.

The Pioneers return to action next Saturday (Oct. 17) at the Trailblazer Invitational in Gray, Tenn.
