Georgia College sweeps Tusculum volleyball to wrap up Pioneer Classic

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Georgia College's Taylor Svehla recorded 12 kills and a .688 hitting percentage in leading the Bobcats to a three-set sweep over host Tusculum University Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Arena.

GC (6-5) won the match by scores of 25-13, 25-11, 25-14 as the Bobcats went 2-1 this weekend at the 2018 Pioneer Classic.

Georgia College finished the match hitting .313 as a team with 36 kills, 10 errors and 83 total attacks.  Tusculum (2-4) hit minus-.050 as the Pioneers tallied 22 kills with 27 hitting errors in their 101 attempts.

Libby Bochniak added 10 kills and a .350 hitting percentage while setter Kayla Brockway finished with 28 assists and 10 digs. Nicole Cohen added 10 digs in the GC victory.

Tusculum's Aubrey Hawkins recorded five kills and a .571 hitting percentage in her one set of action.  Kayli Dempster also had five kills and six digs, while Emily Lawless finished with team highs with her 17 assists and seven digs. Melissa Mazur posted a career-low six digs in the loss.

The Bobcats led wire-to-wire to win the opening set 25-13 as GC hit .360 in the first frame.

Georgia College started the second stanza with a 10-4 run including back-to-back kills from Emily Crowell and a kill by Libby Bochniak.  Leading 13-7, GC closed out the set with a 12-4 run including consecutive TU hitting errors to close out the second as the Bobcats won 25-11.

In the third set, the lead exchanged hands twice with four ties in the early going including 5-5.  GC scored four straight points and increased its advantage to 13-7 following a TU hitting error.  Tusculum trimmed the deficit to 14-11 after a Lawless kill.  But the Bobcats ended the match with an 11-3 spurt to claim the set 25-14.

Tusculum returns to action this Friday when they open its 20th South Atlantic Conference season when they host Catawba College for a 7 p.m. match at Pioneer Arena.
