Tusculum volleyball hosts SAC Regional Crossover this weekend to open 2018 season

 

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The Tusculum University women's volleyball team will open its 2018 campaign this weekend as TU hosts the South Atlantic Conference Regional Crossover at Pioneer Arena.  A second site as part of the SAC Regional Crossover is being held concurrently at Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tennessee.

The action begins at noon on Friday when Mars Hill takes on Chowan.  Mars Hill will remain in action and face Emmanuel at 2 p.m.

Tusculum makes its 2018 debut at 4 p.m. against Chowan followed by a 6 p.m. contest versus Emmanuel.

On Saturday, Belmont Abbey and King University come to Greeneville.  Mars Hill will take on Belmont Abbey and noon.  Tusculum will face Belmont Abbey at 2 p.m. for the Pioneers' third match of the weekend.  Mars Hill squares off against King at 4 p.m., followed by Tusculum and King at 6 p.m. to wrap-up the SAC Regional Crossover.

Tusculum head coach Michael Robinson is entering his 11th season at the helm of the TU program.  He returns seven letter-winners from last year's 15-16 squad which finished fourth in the SAC standings.

Leading the charge for the Pioneers is the senior duo of Cassie Born and Melissa Mazur.  Born (Horse Shoe, N.C.) is coming off an All-Conference season where she led the Pioneers in total kills (320 – 6th in SAC) and kills per set (2.96 – 9th in SAC).  She also averaged 3.21 digs per set and finished 10th in the league with her 32 service aces.  Her 377.5 total points last season were ranked sixth in the league.

Mazur, a three-time All-Conference libero, enters her final collegiate campaign with 1,865 career digs to her credit which are the third-most in program history, while averaging 6.09 digs per set which is second in the TU record book.  In 2017, the Chicago, Illinois product averaged 5.65 digs per set, which was third in the conference.

Tusculum is opening the 2018 season playing its first eight matches at home. Following this weekend's SAC Regional Crossover, TU will entertain Montevallo (Sep. 7) and Georgia College (Sep. 8) next week in Greeneville.
