Volleyball falls in five-set thriller to Catawba

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The Catawba College volleyball team edged host Tusculum College in a five-set South Atlantic Conference thriller at Pioneer Arena.

The Catawba Indians (12-12, 9-8 SAC) won the match by scores of 19-25, 25-20, 25-20, 20-25, 15-12 to complete the season sweep over the Pioneers (11-12, 8-9 SAC). Both were five-set decisions.

Tusculum's Sabrina Schleuger led all players with 15 kills, five service aces for her 20 points. Rachel Garnett tallied 12 kills and two blocks, while Danae Stauffer, Sarah Bouley and Madison Shumaker accounted for eight kills apiece.

Tusculum setter Hannah Berling posted a double-double with a career-best 54 assists, to go along with her 15 digs.

TC's Melissa Mazur led the Pioneers defensive efforts with 33 kills, to go along with her six assists.

Catawba's Erin Morant and Alex Hopper posted 13 kills each, while McKenzie Garrison and Meredith Furr finished with 24 and 21 digs respectively.

Catawba ended the contest with 14 total team blocks, led by Bri Howards seven blocks (2 solos, 5 assists).

The Pioneers return to action on Saturday as they host Queens University of Charlotte for a 12 p.m. contest.
