GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Rachel Garnett tallied
12 kills, but the Tusculum College volleyball team suffered a 3-0
loss to Wingate University on Friday night inside Pioneer Arena.
Melissa Mazur tallied 20 digs for TC (7-10, 4-7 South Atlantic
Conference).
Shelly Stumpff led all players with 13 kills for the Bulldogs
(17-2, 11-1) and recorded a double-double with 10 digs. Abby
Saehler matched Garnett with 12 kills while Iris Brewer tallied a
match-high 34 assists.
Hannah Berling dished out 33 assists and tallied her team-best
11th double-double of the year with 11 digs. Sabrina Schleuger
finished with eight kills while Danae Stauffer and Laryssa Welch
each had six. Sarah Bouley dug-up 12 balls.
The Pioneers used a quick 4-0 spurt to take an early 4-1 lead
in the first set. TC held the lead for the next few rallies but the
Bulldogs used a 4-0 run to turn a 10-8 deficit into a 12-10
advantage. Tusculum was able to tie the set at 12-12 but a Rachel
Cecka kill capped a 3-0 spurt to give Wingate at 15-12 lead.
Later in the frame, the Pioneers faced a four-point deficit
but tied the set at 19-19 with a 5-1 run. The Bulldogs scored four
of the next five to take a 23-20 advantage. Stumpff gave WU set
point at 24-21 with a kill. TC was able to fight it off once with a
Schleuger smash, but Anna Holmquist clinched the set for Wingate
with kill in the ensuing rally.
The Pioneers led the second set 4-2 early, but a 7-1 run for
the Bulldogs gave them a 9-5 advantage. Wingate lead for the
remainder of the frame as the Pioneers could only get back within
two points of the lead midway through the set.
Facing a 2-0 deficit, Tusculum led 13-11 midway through the
third. Wingate used a 5-0 spurt to re-take the lead and later held
a 20-17 advantage looking for the sweep. However, the Pioneers
scored four of the next five points to tie the set at 21-21.
The Bulldogs answered with a Seahler kill but an attack error
by Checka tied it back up at 22-22. Kayla Hartley stepped to the
line for the Pioneers but committed a service error before Stumpff
earned Wingate match point at 24-22. Following at Pioneer timeout,
Oakley Attaway earned the match-clinching kill.
Tusculum will return to the court tomorrow when Coker College
comes into Pioneer Arena for another SAC matchup. First serve is
set for 2 p.m.
