SALISBURY, N.C. --- Catawba College rallied from a 2-0 deficit
to win three-straight sets and defeat Tusculum College 3-2 (24-26,
15-25, 25-23, 25-13, 15-9) in South Atlantic Conference volleyball
action on Friday night. Sara Bouley led the Pioneers (5-4, 3-3 SAC)
with a career-high 14 kills and 14 digs.
Rachel Garnett found the floor on 12 kills while Sabrina
Schleuger added 11. Melissa Mazur, the SAC's leading defender,
finished with 25 digs while Hannah Berling handed out 40 assists
while nine digs and six kills. Danae Stauffer added 10 digs, a
season high.
In the fifth set, the Pioneers jumped out to an early 4-2 lead
with back-to-back kills by Bouley. Catawba (6-7, 3-3) answered with
a kill from Erin Morant but TC earned its two-point advantage back
with an Indian service error. Facing a 5-3 deficit, Catawba scored
three-straight points to take its first lead of the set at
6-5.
TC tied it back up off an attack error by Alex Hopper and
re-took the lead at 7-6 on a ball handling error by Kaytee
Frabotta. A few rallies later, an attack error by Garnett broke an
8-8 tie to give the Indians the lead. However, Garnett responded by
knotting the game at 9-9 with her final kill of the match.
The Indians would go on to score the next six points to
complete their improbable comeback to win the fifth game 15-9. TC
committed four-straight attack errors and one service error in the
Catawba's final push to the win.
Hopper led Catawba with a match-high 15 kills while McKenzie
Garrison added 10 kills and had a double-double with 15 digs. Evan
Schultz had a match-high 28 digs while Frabotta finished with a
match-high 46 assists and also had a double-double with 10
digs.
The Indians led for most of the first set and used a 5-1 run
to take a 19-14 advantage. Back-to-back kills by Schleuger and an
Indian attack error cut Catawba's lead to 19-17. However, Catawba
scored five of the next eight to earn set point at 24-20.
A pair of kills by Laryssa Welch and one from Bouley got the
Pioneers within one at 24-23. TC then benefited from an error by
Hopper that tied the set at 24 and head to extra points. With Kayla
Hartley still at the serving line, Frabotta was whistled for a ball
handing error before Bri Howard committed an attack error. The
Pioneers closed out the game on an improbable 6-0 run to win the
first set 26-24.
A 5-0 run for Catawba in the second set helped the Indians
jump out to an early 10-4 lead. Trailing 13-9, Berling stepped to
the line and the Pioneers reeled off seven-straight points to jump
out to a 16-13 advantage. Bouley had a pair of kills in the run and
the Indians committed four-straight attack errors.
A kill by Rachel Gallup finally broke up Tusculum's momentum
and the Indians trailed by just 17-15 two rallies later. However,
the Pioneers picked up the pace and scored eight-straight points to
roll to a 25-15 second-set victory. Tusculum was flawless
offensively in the frame with 13 kills and no errors.
The Indians scored eight-straight points to take a 15-8
advantage in the fourth set. Later in the frame, TC got within a
point of the lead at 19-18 on a kill from Mariah Lewis. The Indians
held set point at 24-21 but Schleuger and Garnett answered with
kills to fight off two set points as TC looked to come back and
sweep the match. However a kill by Hopper ended the set for the
Indians to send the match to the fourth game.
In the fourth set, the Indians held a narrow 15-12 lead before
using a 10-1 run to push the match to the decisive fifth
game.
Tusculum will be back in action tomorrow when they visit
Queens University of Charlotte for a Saturday afternoon matinee.
