Pioneers beat Bluefield State for second straight sweep

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum University earned its second consecutive sweep with a 7-0 win over Bluefield State University in non-conference women's tennis action on Wednesday at the Nichols Tennis Complex.

The Pioneers (5-3), who opened their SAC schedule Tuesday with a 7-0 victory at Mars Hill, lost just one set between singles and doubles against the Big Blues (0-1), who fielded a lineup that included three players ranked in the fall Intercollegiate Tennis Association Atlantic Region singles rankings.

In doubles, Tabitha Howe and Johanna Palacio picked up a 6-2 victory at flight three over Daniela Cruzado and Virginia Zanotti. At flight two, Leonie Floeth and Erin Laubscher clinched the team point with a 6-3 win over Victoria Cabral and Paulina Moreno, while Paulina Loretz and Valentina Loretz combined for a 7-5 win at flight one over Shreya Chakrabarly and Juliana Jimenez.

In singles play, Valentina Loretz earned a 6-0, 6-0 win over Ghita Courdi at flight six, while Elodie Baechler was a 6-2, 6-0 winner over Daniela Cruzado, ranked 19th in the Atlantic Region, at flight four. Paulina Loretz clinched the win for the Pioneers with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Adriana Torroba at flight three, and Leonie Floeth outlasted Chakrabarly, ranked 11th in the Atlantic Region, by a score of 0-6, 6-4, (10-2) at flight one. Howe claimed a 6-4, 6-4 win over Jimenez, ranked 18th in the region, at flight two, and Ylva Frafjord Landa capped the win with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Zanotti at flight five.

Tusculum will resume its schedule on Friday, March 3 with a South Atlantic Conference match at Anderson, beginning at 2 p.m.
