Pioneers win deciding match, earn 4-3 win over Anderson

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- A three-set win by Paulina Loretz in the deciding singles match gave Tusculum University a 4-3 victory over Anderson University in South Atlantic Conference women's tennis action at the Nichols Tennis Complex Tuesday afternoon.

Loretz defeated Elisa Aquirre 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 at flight four to give the Pioneers (6-2, 2-1 SAC) the victory in a match that was tied at 1-1, 2-2 and 3-3 before Tusculum earned the clinch in the final match of the day. Three of the six singles matches went three sets, with Tusculum winning two of the three against Anderson (8-3, 2-1 SAC).

The Trojans went up 1-0 by winning two of the three doubles set, with the only victory for the Pioneers at flight two as Floeth and Loretz beat Katie Robeson and Anna Greer 6-2.

In singles, Valentina Loretz earned the Pioneers' first point with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Laura Alvarez Tello at flight five. Anderson went up 2-1 with a three-set win at flight one, but Tabitha Howe put Tusculum back up with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 win over Katie Robeson at flight three. Floeth then defeated Greer, ranked 49th by the ITA in Division II singles, by a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 score at flight two for a 3-2 Tusculum lead. Anderson knotted the match at 3-3 with a victory at flight six, but Paulina Loretz held on to defeat Aquirre and give Tusculum the victory.

The Pioneers will visit Wingate on Saturday for a match against their conference rivals, with action beginning at 10:30 a.m.
