Pioneers stay unbeaten in SAC with win over Carson-Newman

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum University earned a 6-1 victory over Carson-Newman University in South Atlantic Conference women's tennis action Wednesday afternoon at the Nichols Tennis Complex.

The 45th-ranked Pioneers (7-2, 3-0 SAC) won their fourth straight match and beat the Eagles (5-6, 2-2 SAC) for the 11th straight time overall and the 11th consecutive year in the regular season by winning in straight sets in four of the six singles matches.

In doubles action, the Pioneers took the team point by winning all three contests by identical 6-2 scores. Annie McCullough and Caitlin McCullough were victorious at flight one over Ana Carla Resende and Ali Harris, Julia Lopez and Africa Mota upset 46th-ranked Hannah Price and Abby Reis at flight two, and Emilie Hansen teamed with Brittani Brooks for the win at flight three over Alisa Liashova and Klara Vuckovic.

In singles, Resende defeated Hansen 6-2, 6-1 at flight one on Lesley Murray Hawk Court, but Caitlin McCullough won 6-1, 7-5 over Price at flight three and Mota beat Reis 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 at flight five to give the Pioneers a 3-1 lead. Annie McCullough clinched the win for the Pioneers with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Harris at flight two, and Tusculum closed out the match with Lopez beating Liashova 6-2, 6-3 at flight four and Martina Marras winning 6-1, 6-3 over Vuckovic at flight six.

The Pioneers will host Newberry in a SAC match on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. at the Nichols Tennis Complex.
