Pioneers shut out Virginia-Wise 7-0 in spring opener

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The Tusculum University women's tennis team officially opened the spring portion of its 2018-19 schedule with a 7-0 win over the University of Virginia-Wise on Saturday at the refurbished Nichols Tennis Complex.

The Pioneers (2-0) did not lose a game in doubles to the Cavaliers (0-5), then lost a total of nine games and zero sets in singles to claim the victory over their future conference opponent.

In doubles, Annie McCullough and Caitlin McCullough won an all-twins matchup at flight one, beating Katya and Liza Akimenko 6-0. At flight two, Julia Lopez and Africa Mota beat Aya Melhem and Grace Hall 6-0, and at flight three Emilie Hansen teamed with Brittani Brooks for a 6-0 win over Montana Hill and Lillian Morris to give Tusculum the doubles point.

In singles, Annie McCullough beat Liza Akimenko 6-2, 6-3 at flight one, Hansen downed Katya Akimenko 6-1, 6-0 at flight two, and Caitlin McCullough defeated Melhem 6-1, 6-1 at flight three. At flight four, Martina Marras won 6-1, 6-0 over Hill, Brooks beat Hall 6-0, 6-0 at flight five and Javiera Ortiz won 6-0, 6-0 over Olivia Dishner at flight six.

Tusculum will travel to Lexington, Kentucky on Friday, Feb. 15 to face Indianapolis in a match that will begin at noon.
