CULLOWHEE, N.C. --- The Tusculum University women's tennis team competed against three Division I opponents at the Western Carolina Invitational, held Saturday and Sunday at the Catamount Athletic Complex.

The competition was held in a split format, with the Pioneers playing Western Carolina in singles and North Carolina A&T and Presbyterian in doubles on Saturday, followed by the opposite on Sunday.

Against Western Carolina, the Pioneers earned two victories in seven singles matches. Annie McCullough defeated Lauren McCall 6-4, 6-2 and Africa Mota was a 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) winner over Carlie Deerh. In doubles, Annie and Caitlin McCullough beat Jordan Strickland and Savannah Taranto 6-2, and Amber Lackey teamed with Emilie Hansen to defeat Jacy Smith and Alexa Webb 6-3.

The Pioneers swept all three doubles contests against North Carolina A&T, as the McCulloughs defeated Fabiana Ramirez and Marlene Estenssoro 6-0, Hansen and Lackey beat Breanna Bryant and Kaya Ellis 6-0, and Javiera Ortiz and Lyndsey Pulliam won 6-2 over Alexandria Stanton and Cameryn Thompson.

Tusculum also won four of its six singles matches against the Aggies, as Lopez defeated Bryant 6-1, 6-2, Brittani Brooks downed Ellis 6-3, 6-0, Pulliam outlasted Stanton 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 and Ortiz got past Thompson 6-3, 6-1.

Against former SAC rival Presbyterian, the Pioneers earned a pair of singles victories. Annie McCullough beat Sydney Patton 6-1, 7-6 and Hansen earend a 4-6, 7-5, 6-0 win over Jessica Leeman. The McCullough sisters also had the only doubles victory for the Pioneers, beating Patton and Tracy Johnson 6-4.

Tusculum will wrap up its fall schedule Friday-Sunday, Oct. 12-14 at the Grizzly Open, hosted by Georgia Gwinnett College in Lawrenceville, Georgia.
