McCullough advances to quarterfinals in ITA Southeast Regional

SUMTER, S.C. --- The Tusculum University women's tennis team took part in the Southeast Regional Small College ITA/Oracle Championships at the Palmetto Tennis Center.

In singles, Annie McCullough advanced to the quarterfinals for the second consecutive year after earning three victories. She beat Elena Bompieri of USC Aiken 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 in her first match, then beat Mirna Curicic of Anderson 6-3, 6-2 in the round of 32. In the round of 16, McCullough upset third-seeded Candice Paya of Columbus State 6-4, 6-3 before falling 6-4, 6-4 to Luise Sachs of Columbus State in the quarterfinals.

Also in singles, Julia Lopez defeated Alejandra Gonzalez of Augusta 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) in the opening round and Martina Marras beat Carolina Correia of Catawba 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 in first-round action. Emilie Hansen received a first-round bye and was a 6-0, 6-3 winner over Daria Avram of Barton in a round of 64 match.

In the consolation bracket, Caitlin McCullough collected a pair of straight-set wins, beating Camila Ramazzini of Flagler 6-2, 7-5 and Nelli Luis of Lander 6-0, 6-1. Africa Mota was also victorious in a consolation match, beating Alice Neves of USC Aiken 4-6, 6-0, (10-5).

In doubles, the lone win for the Pioneers came when Lopez and Mota teamed up for a 6-0 win over Charlotte Clarke and Lea Weber of Coker in the first round.

Tusculum will continue its fall tournament play on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 6-7 at Western Carolina.
