Pioneers hold steady in ITA national, NCAA regional rankings

TEMPE, Ariz. --- The Tusculum women's tennis team is ranked 14th in this week's Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II Top 50 National Team Rankings. The Pioneers are also ranked second in the latest NCAA Division II Southeast Region rankings.

The Pioneers slipped one position in this week's ITA computer survey, which was calculated through matches of April 8. Tusculum also has three singles players and one doubles team included in the latest rankings. Tusculum also remained second in the NCAA regional rankings, which are the official poll utilized by the NCAA in the championship process.

In singles, sophomore Katarina Majorova moved up to 40th despite taking her first loss of the season to 58th-ranked Carlotta Nassi of Queens in her only match last week. She entered the week with a 12-1 overall singles record and a 6-1 mark in South Atlantic Conference competition.

Sophomore Annie McCullough climbed from 68th to 66th in the ITA rankings following a three-set win over Sasha Davidzenka of Queens last week. McCullough began the week unbeaten in singles at 13-0, with a 7-0 record in conference matches.

Senior Franziska Funke slid from 31st to 69th in the ITA this week following her first loss of the year, by a 6-4, 6-0 score to 42nd-ranked Yana Fleyer of Queens. Funke started the week with a 13-1 overall record and a 6-1 record in SAC action.

In doubles, the team of Annie and Caitlin McCullough dropped from 14th to 23rd after an 8-4 loss to Queens' 41st ranked team of Fleyer and Davidzenka. The duo began the week with a 14-2 record this season, with a 6-1 mark in conference play.

Tusculum will carry an 18-1 overall record and an 8-1 conference mark into its final regular-season match on Saturday at Newberry. The Pioneers have clinched a top-four seed in the SAC Championship tournament and will host a quarterfinal match on Tuesday.
