Pioneers win 13th straight with 9-0 sweep of Catawba

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum recorded its eighth shutout in 13 matches this season as the 21st-ranked Pioneers defeated Catawba 9-0 in South Atlantic Conference women's tennis action Sunday at the Nichols Tennis Complex.

The Pioneers (13-0, 3-0 SAC) led 3-0 after doubles and clinched the match with a pair of straight-set victories in singles action against the Indians (3-6, 0-3 SAC).

In doubles, Katarina Majorova and Franziska Funke teamed up for an 8-1 win over Sophie Hirsh and Isabel Benoit at flight two, followed by an 8-3 win by Africa Mota and Amber Lackey at flight three over Kristen Rocko and Emily Corcoran. At flight one, the 20th-ranked doubles team of Annie McCullough and Caitlin McCullough earned an 8-6 victory over Erisa Onchi and Olivia Wooldridge.

In singles, 47th-ranked Funke defeated Hirsh 6-0, 6-1 at flight two for a 4-0 Tusculum lead, and Mota clinched the match by beating Corcoran at flight five by a score of 6-2, 6-2. Majorova, ranked 12th in Division II in singles, needed a tiebreaker to beat Onchi 11-9 at flight one after rallying from a 6-4 set one loss with a 6-1 win in the second set.

Annie McCullough, ranked 27th, beat Wooldridge 6-1, 6-2 at flight three to give the Pioneers a 7-0 lead, and Caitlin McCullough beat Rocko 8-1 in a pro set at flight four. Brittani Brooks earned the final point for the Pioneers with an 8-7 (7-2) pro set win over Kirsten Saltus at flight six.

Tusculum will head on the road Wednesday to face Lincoln Memorial in a SAC matchup.
