Majorova earns second SAC Player of the Week award of season

ROCK HILL, S.C. --- Tusculum sophomore Katarina Majorova has been named the AstroTurf South Atlantic Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the week ending March 11, the SAC office announced Monday.

Majorova, ranked 12th in Division II in singles by the ITA, went 3-0 in both singles and doubles as the 21st-ranked Pioneers improved their record to 10-0 with four victories last week, including a 9-0 win over Coker in the conference opener on Saturday. It is the second time this season that Majorova was honored as Player of the Week by the conference.

Playing at number-one singles for the Pioneers, Majorova began her week with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Polina Novachuk of Chowan on Tuesday. She then defeated Yuliia Russu of regionally-ranked Palm Beach Atlantic 6-1, 6-2 on Friday, then came back on Saturday for a 6-2, 6-3 win over Jennifer Mezei of Coker. The victories improved Majorova's singles record to 6-0 this season.

In doubles, the Martin, Slovakia native teamed up with Franziska Funke at flight two for the Pioneers, starting with an 8-3 win over Chowan's team of Victoria Smolchenkova and Hanna Tarlouskaya on Tuesday. The duo then beat Johanna Kern and Romina Bolagay of Palm Beach Atlantic 8-3 on Friday, followed by an 8-2 win over Coker's Jennifer Ruetten and Julia Sorrells in Saturday's match.

Majorova, the 2017 SAC Freshman of the Year, has a 21-7 career singles record and a 28-7 record in doubles for the Pioneers, who are off to a 10-0 start this season and are ranked 21st in the latest ITA Division II national rankings.

Tusculum will resume its schedule on Wednesday when the Pioneers host Anderson in a SAC match at the Nichols Tennis Complex, starting at 2 p.m.
