Funke wins singles and doubles titles at Grizzly Open

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. --- Franziska Funke won the A draw singles championship and teamed with Katarina Majorova for the doubles title as Tusculum women's tennis swept the awards at the Grizzly Open, hosted by Georgia Gwinnett College.

Africa Mota won the B draw singles championship, while Brittani Brooks and Javiera Ortiz earned consolation bracket victories for the Pioneers.

Funke, seeded second in the A singles draw, defeated Maria Raich of Emmanuel 6-4, 6-2 in the round of 16 and beat teammate Annie McCullough 6-4, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. Funke claimed a 6-1, 6-3 win over Gabrielle Robinson of Georgia Gwinnett in the semifinals, then beat top-seeded Henar Garcia Munoz of Georgia Gwinnett by a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 score in the championship match.

Mota, seeded second in the B draw, downed Chloe O'Connor of Emmanuel 6-4, 6-1 in the round of 16, then beat Katie Larck of Point 6-0, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. Mota defeated teammate Julia Lopez in the semifinals, then claimed the flight B title with a 6-2, 6-4 win in the finals over Arianna Orozco of Bluefield.

Funke and Majorova were the top seed in doubles, and began their run to the championship with an 8-1 win over Callie Franklin and Bailey McCammon of West Georgia in the round of 16. After receiving a default win over Pioneer teammates Mota and Ortiz in the quarterfinals, Funke and Majorova beat Chiara Rebecchi and Robinson of Georgia Gwinnett 8-1 in the semifinals. In the finals, Funke and Majorova downed Munoz and Mar Pardos Cid 8-6 to win the doubles championship.

Brooks dropped into the consolation bracket after a 6-4, 6-2 loss to Fantine Botella of Emmanuel in the A draw first round. She defeated Jennifer Ball of Southern Wesleyan 8-0 in the quarterfinals, then advanced to the finals by default over teammate Caitlin McCullough. In the consolation final, Brooks beat Raich 6-3, 6-2.

Ortiz lost to Larck 3-6, 6-4 (10-4) in her first B draw match, then earned four victories in the consolation bracket. Ortiz edged Gabrielle Chanthaphaeng of West Georgia 9-8 (9-7), downed MyKenzie Roach of Bluefield 8-0, won 6-3, 6-2 over Franklin in the semifinals and then won over teammate Pulliam 6-4, 6-2 in the final match.

Pulliam lost her opening match to Brooke Kane of West Georgia in the first round, but rallied to the consolation final with wins over Esther de Miguel of Point (8-3), McCammon (8-1) and by default over Luz Padilla of Point.

Lopez and Jessica Lackey each advanced to the B draw semifinals following a pair of wins. Lopez defeated Franklin 6-2, 6-2 in the round of 16 and beat Kane 6-3, 6-3 in the quarterfinals before falling to Orozco in the semifinals. Lackey earned a 6-4, 6-1 win over Katharina Kiderlen of Emmanuel in the round of 16, and beat Shelby Brown of West Georgia 7-5, 6-4 in the quarterfinals before being eliminated by Mota in the semifinals.

In the doubles draw, Brooks and Amber Lackey downed the West Georgia duo of Chanthaphaeng and Sara Watson 8-1 in the round of 16, then defeated Kiderlen and Raich 8-2 in the quarterfinals before falling 8-6 to Munoz and Pardos Cid in the semifinal round.
