Majorova named SAC Freshman of the Year as three Pioneers voted All-Conference

ROCK HILL, S.C. --- Tusculum's Katarina Majorova has been named the South Atlantic Conference Freshman of the Year, one of three Pioneers to earn SAC Women's Tennis All-Conference honors as announced by the league office on Wednesday.

Majorova was also named first-team All-SAC in both singles and doubles, along with junior Franziska Funke. Freshman Annie McCullough was named honorable mention All-SAC after helping the Pioneers to a share of second place in the conference with a 9-2 record.

Majorova, a native of Martin, Slovakia, played number-one singles and finished with a 15-6 record for the Pioneers, including an 8-2 mark in conference play. Majorova was ranked 15th in singles in the ITA Southeast Region during the season, and posted a 2-3 record against Division II regionally-ranked opponents. Majorova also had a 1-2 record against Division I opponents, including a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Western Carolina.

Funke, a native of Bochum, Germany, was named first-team All-Conference in singles for the second straight season as she turned in a 15-8 overall record while playing primarily at number-two singles for the Pioneers. She went 9-1 in conference play and did not lose a set in any of her nine victories, and had seven of her eight overall losses against either regionally-ranked or Division I opponents. Funke has a three-year singles record of 51-10 for the Pioneers.

As a team, Majorova and Funke were 18-6 overall and 10-1 in conference matches for the Pioneers, with their only league loss coming in a tiebreaker. The duo was ranked eighth in the Southeast Region by the ITA and finished with a 3-1 record against regionally-ranked opponents and 1-1 against nationally-ranked foes, while posting a 1-2 mark against Division I opposition. Funke earns All-SAC first-team honors in doubles for the second time in her career, having also done so as a freshman in 2015.

McCullough compiled an 18-4 record while playing primarily at number-three singles for the Pioneers. The Belfast, Northern Ireland native was 8-2 in conference matches with seven of her victories coming in straight sets. She was also the winner of Flight B at the ITA Southeast Regional in October, and had a 4-2 record in matches against regionally-ranked teams. McCullough also won two of three matches against Division I opponents, with her only loss coming in a third-set tiebreaker.

Joining Majorova as award winners for the conference were Player of the Year Carlotta Nassi of Queens and Coach of the Year Michael Cabana of Wingate.
