GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- A doubles sweep propelled Tusculum to a 7-2 victory over Anderson in South Atlantic Conference women's tennis action Tuesday at the Nichols Tennis Complex.
The 39th-ranked Pioneers (13-5, 8-1 SAC) snapped a five-match winning streak of the Trojans (14-4, 7-2 SAC) and moved back into sole possession of second place in the conference ahead of their showdown on the road against Wingate on Sunday afternoon.
In doubles, the Pioneers won a showdown of regionally-ranked teams at flight one as Katarina Majorova and Franziska Funke, ranked ninth in the Southeast Region by the ITA, defeated the Trojans' eighth-ranked doubles squad of Laura Dean and Rebecca Bruning by an 8-2 score.
Annie McCullough and Jule Brass also picked up a win at flight two, defeating Delaney Wiggins and Jacqueline Olivia 8-3. At flight three, Brittani Brooks and Amber Lackey went to a tiebreaker to defeat Ivey Welborn and Jennifer Holcombe 9-8 (8-6).
Majorova and Dean, both ranked in the region in singles as well, met at flight one where 15th-ranked Majorova defeated 20th-ranked Dean 6-4, 6-3. At flight two, Funke downed 19th-ranked Bruning 6-0, 6-2 to clinch the win for the Pioneers. Also claiming wins for the Pioneers were Brooks at flight five by an 8-6 score over Olivia, while Lackey beat Holcombe 8-1 at flight six.
The Pioneers are home on Saturday at noon against Bluefield State, and will celebrate Senior Day as Sarah Baker will be honored before the match.
