Pioneers ranked ninth in ITA Southeast Region

TEMPE, Ariz. --- The Tusculum women's tennis team is ranked ninth in the Southeast Region in the latest Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II rankings, which were released on Wednesday.

In addition, freshman Katarina Majorova is ranked 15th in the region in singles and is eighth in doubles along with junior Franziska Funke. Majorova is the highest-ranked singles player from the South Atlantic Conference.

Majorova is 7-3 overall in singles for the Pioneers, with two of her losses coming to Division I opponents, and is 1-1 against regionally-ranked players. Majorova is 3-0 in South Atlantic Conference matches, winning six of seven sets in her three victories. The Martin, Slovakia native has recorded five shutout sets and has lost four total games or less in six of her seven wins.

In doubles, Majorova and Funke have combined for a 10-3 record at flight one for the Pioneers this season. Two of their three losses came to Division I opponents, with the third to a regionally-ranked team from West Alabama. Among the wins for Majorova and Funke was a 9-8 win over the top-ranked doubles team in the NAIA from Georgia Gwinnett College and an 8-3 win against the fifth-ranked doubles team in the Midwest Region from Northwood University.

Tusculum is one of three South Atlantic Conference schools in the Southeast Region rankings this week, joined by Wingate (5th) and Queens (10th). Armstrong State is the top-ranked team in the poll, followed by Columbus State, Flagler, Georgia College and Wingate.

The Pioneers will visit Catawba for a SAC match on Friday at 2 p.m. in Salisbury, North Carolina.
