Tusculum upsets #35 Northwood, 5-2

HILTON HEAD, S.C. --- The Tusculum College women's tennis team handed Northwood University its first loss of the season as the Pioneers beat the 35th-ranked Timberwolves 5-2 Tuesday afternoon.

The Pioneers (7-3) won two of three doubles matches against the Timberwolves (16-1) then won three of four completed singles matches to clinch the victory in the first of three Spring Break contests this week.

In doubles, the team of Katarina Majorova and Franziska Funke defeated Carol Arnez-Mercado and Anna Aniskina 8-3 at flight one, while Brittani Brooks and Amber Lackey teamed for an 8-2 win at flight three against Olesia Riabchuk and Tetyana Pavych.

In singles, the Pioneers went up 4-1 as Majorova beat Arnez-Mercado 6-2, 6-1 at flight one and Funke downed Riabchuk 6-2, 6-2 at flight two. After the Timberwolves picked up a win in a 10-point tiebreaker at flight three, Africa Mota clinched the match for Tusculum with a 7-5, 0-6, (10-6) victory over Aniskina at flight four.

Tusculum will continue its schedule Tuesday night against Palm Beach Atlantic before concluding its trip to Hilton Head Wednesday morning against Davis & Elkins.
