Pioneers shut out Mars Hill 9-0 in SAC opener

MARS HILL, N.C. --- The Tusculum College women's tennis team opened its South Atlantic Conference schedule Thursday afternoon with a 9-0 victory at Mars Hill University.

The Pioneers (3-2, 1-0 SAC) swept doubles from the Lions (4-4, 0-1 SAC) then did not lose a set in singles to finish off the victory.

In doubles, the team of Franziska Funke and Katarina Majorova defeated Jasha Geerdink and Dante Hart 8-3 at flight one, Sarah Baker and Annie McCullough downed Jade Henke and Hannah Hill 8-1 at flight two, and at flight three Brittani Brooks and Amber Lackey teamed for an 8-0 win over Dani Potts and Ashley Belk.

In singles, Majorova defeated Geerdink 6-0, 6-4 at flight one, McCullough beat Henke 6-0, 6-1 at flight three and Africa Mota downed Potts 6-3, 6-0 at flight four to lock up the match. In pro-set action, Funke beat Hart 8-0 at flight two, Baker won 8-1 over Hill at flight five, and Brooks bested Belk 8-1 at flight six.

The Pioneers will remain on the road Friday afternoon for a 2:30 p.m. match at North Georgia. The match had been scheduled for this past Sunday, but was postponed due to rain.
