Pioneers defeat Virginia-Wise 6-3 in home opener

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The Tusculum College women's tennis team earned a 6-3 victory over the University of Virginia's College at Wise in non-conference action at the Nichols Tennis Complex Saturday afternoon.

The Pioneers (2-0) swept doubles play against the Cavaliers (6-5) then split the six singles matches to earn the win in their final dual match of the fall.

In doubles, Franziska Funke and Katarina Majorova teamed to defeat Daria Tyshchenko and Bailey Christoforatos 8-2 at flight one. The team of Sarah Baker and Annie McCullough, which won the ITA Southeast Region doubles title last weekend, earned another victory by beating Mackenzie Lawson and Marti Gay 8-1 at flight two. At flight three, the Pioneers' team of Jule Brass and Brittani Brooks was an 8-3 winner over Taylor Carter and Aya Melhem.

In singles play, the Pioneers claimed all three of their victories in straight sets. McCullough defeated Tyshchenko 6-1, 6-4 at flight one, Brooks downed Christoferatos 6-0, 6-3 at flight three and Julia Lopez was a 6-3, 6-0 winner over Carter at flight four. Two of the Cavaliers' three wins were in pro sets, with the third coming on a tiebreaker.

The Pioneers will wrap up their fall schedule next weekend when they travel to Lawrenceville, Georgia to compete in the Grizzly Open, hosted by NAIA powerhouse Georgia Gwinnett College.
