Pioneers open fall schedule with 9-0 win at King

BRISTOL, Tenn. --- The Tusculum College women's tennis team opened the fall portion of its 2016-17 schedule with a 9-0 victory over King University Saturday afternoon.

The Pioneers (1-0) dropped a total of three games in singles and one in doubles to earn the win over the Tornado (0-1). Three Pioneer freshmen made successful collegiate debuts with victories in the match.

In doubles, Franziska Funke and newcomer Katarina Majorova defeated Marianne Hull and Ashley Salazar by an 8-1 score at flight one, Sarah Baker teamed with rookie Annie McCullough to beat Katya Cerny and Emily Smith 8-0 at flight two, while at flight three Jule Brass and freshman Brittani Brooks downed Catherine Vezey and Haley Maloney 8-0.

In singles, Majorova, McCullough, Baker and Brooks all earned 6-0, 6-0 victories at flights one, three, four and six respectively. At flight two, Funke won 6-2, 6-0 over Cerny while Brass was a 6-1, 6-0 victor over Maloney at flight five.

The Pioneers will play at the ITA Southeast Regional in Sumter, South Carolina next weekend before playing their final dual match of the fall on Saturday, Oct. 8 against Virginia-Wise at the Nichols Tennis Complex.
