Tusculum earns 9-0 victory over Bluefield State

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. --- The Tusculum College Women's tennis team picked up a 9-0 victory over Bluefield State College in non-conference action Sunday afternoon.

The 44th-ranked Pioneers (17-3) dropped a total of five games in doubles, then won three singles matches in straight sets en route to the victory over the Big Blues (2-13).

In doubles, Erin Mills and Kealee Heffner boosted their record to 16-1 as they defeated Wendy Rudhu and Tafadzwa Mawisire 8-4 at flight one, Franziska Funke and Amanda Sumner won 8-1 at flight two against Laura Hernandez and Maria Hernandez, and Adrienne Kaye and Emily Waters moved to 13-0 as a team as they combined for an 8-0 victory at flight three against Marta Briales and Alaina Blankenship.

In singles, Funke improved her record to 18-1 as she defeated Rudhu 6-0, 6-1 at flight one, Jule Brass downed Laura Hernandez 6-2, 6-1 at flight three and Waters beat Maria Hernandez 6-2, 6-1 at flight four to clinch the match for the Pioneers.

In other singles contests, Kaye defeated Mawisire 8-4 at flight two, Sarah Baker won 8-0 against Briales at flight five, and Sumner bested Blankenship 8-3 at flight six.

The Pioneers will open the final week of the regular season with a South Atlantic Conference match at Carson-Newman on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
