GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The Tusculum College women's tennis team opened the spring portion of its 2011-12 season with an 8-1 win over Milligan College, Friday afternoon at the Nichols Tennis Complex.

Milligan (1-4) salvaged a point at No. 2 doubles with a 9-7 marathon win over TC's Courtney Conley and Taylor Patterson.

Conley and Patterson answered back in singles play. Conley clinched the deciding point with her 6-2, 6-2 win over Carpenter at the third flight. Patterson knocked off Rainwater at No. 4 singles with a 7-6 (7-1), 6-0 victory.

TC also got singles wins by Verner, Doss, Buckmaster and Hutchison.

"It was good to finally get back onto the court for the women's team," said Tusculum head coach Tommy Arnett. "We still need to work out our doubles combinations, but we came out strong in singles to close out today's match."

The Pioneers return to action Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. when they host Virginia-Wise, weather permitting.
