GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Emilee Futrell scored her second goal of the match 5:13 into overtime to lift Carson-Newman University to a 3-2 victory over Tusculum University in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action Wednesday night at Pioneer Field.
Futrell blocked a clearing attempt in the Tusculum end and had an open net to hit for the Eagles (10-5-1, 7-2-1 SAC), who clinched a tie for second place in the final conference standings. Lara Hallgrimsdottir also scored for the Eagles, who outshot the Pioneers 27-14 while playing the entire second half and overtime one player up.
Chayse Stonebraker scored in the 65th minute and Yvette Raaijen tallied on a penalty kick with 3:32 left to send the game into overtime for the Pioneers (7-10-0, 3-7-0 SAC). Raaijen's goal was her team-high fifth of the season and fourth in four penalty attempts.
Carson-Newman had the first two shots on goal in the match, but Tusculum keeper Cecilie Ting Mortensen made saves on Makayla Garner in the third minute and Addie Henry in the fourth minute. Tusculum had a free kick in the sixth minute, but Raaijen's blast from 40 yards hit off the upper right corner of the frame and caromed away.
The Eagles went up 1-0 at 8:42 as the Eagles' Kristina Markfort was fouled near the top of the box. Hallgrimsdottir stepped up and converted her third penalty of the year. Mortensen came back to deny Garner in the 21st and 24th minutes, while Tusculum continued to look for its first shot on goal.
Momentum swung in Carson-Newman's favor in the 38th minute, when a foul by the Pioneers against Eagle keeper Jasmine Rizk was deemed worthy of a red card. Tusculum finished out the half one player down as Carson-Newman carried a 7-5 shot lead and a 1-0 goal lead into intermission.
In the second half, the Eagles' offense was sparked by Futrell, who had shots on goal in the 48th, 54th, 57th and 59th minutes. Her final attempt was knocked over the goal from close range by Mortensen.
Despite the lopsided shot count and being one player down, the Pioneers were able to come back and tie the match at 1-1 with 25:57 to go. A corner kick by Kaitlyn Watson was played to Sydney Rose in the box, whose shot was steered by Stonebraker past Rizk for her first goal of the season.
The deadlock was short-lived as Futrell collected her eighth goal of the season less than two minutes later, at 65:54. Henry fed Griffin down the left side, who threaded a pass to Futrell in the middle which was deposited to the far post for a 2-1 Carson-Newman lead just 1:51 after Stonebraker's goal.
Tusculum tried to respond for a second time as Brianna Garcia put two shots on goal, including one from a sharp angle that was batted away by Rizk in the 71st minute. With under four minutes left, the match appeared in hand for Carson-Newman until a defensive turnover sent the Pioneers' Brooke Radcliffe toward goal. Radcliffe was fouled by the defense, and Raaijen knotted the match at 2-2 with just 3:32 remaining.
Carson-Newman had the final two shots of the second half, but neither were threatening as the teams went to overtime -- the Eagles for the second time in their last three matches and the Pioneers for the first time this season. A shot by Henry was wide just over a minute into the first extra period, and the second shot by Futrell was the winner.
Mortensen finished with 15 saves for the Pioneers, which are the third-most in a match in program history and the most since Whitney Wardrop had a school-record 18 stops against Carson-Newman in 2005. Rizk had all four of her saves in the second half for the Eagles.
Carson-Newman had a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks over Tusculum, while the Eagles were called for 16 fouls to 11 by the Pioneers. Tusculum was flagged twice for offsides and Carson-Newman once during the match.
