Third-ranked Columbus State defeats Pioneers in non-conference match

COLUMBUS, Ga. --- Five different players scored goals as third-ranked Columbus State University defeated Tusculum University 6-0 in non-conference women's soccer action Wednesday afternoon at the Walden Soccer Complex.

Maddie DeFranco scored two goals and added an assist for the Cougars (13-0-1), who outshot the Pioneers (7-6-3) by a 30-4 margin in the match. Olivia Jarrell had a goal and an assist for Columbus State, which extended its winning streak to 10 matches in a row.

The Cougars led 2-0 at halftime and scored four more times in the second half to send the Pioneers to their second consecutive loss. Columbus State had a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks over Tusculum, and a 16-1 edge in shots on goal in the match.

Columbus State opened the scoring at 17:01 as Murphy scored her first goal of the season following a turnover at the top of the box. DeFranco extended the Cougars' lead to 2-0 at 34:55 as she tapped in a cross from Jarrell for her fourth goal of the year.

In the second half, Flo Spano gave Columbus State at 3-0 lead at 51:33 as she took a pass from Maddy Peterson and fired home her third goal of the season. Exactly 11 minutes later, Parker Morgan netted her first goal of the season off an assist from Riley Clark.

Jarrell tallied her 15th goal of the season at 70:05 as she deposited a rebound of a shot by DeFranco, and DeFranco closed out the scoring with 9:20 left as she one-timed a pass from Maria Kilset.

Columbus State was called for 10 fouls in the match to six by Tusculum, and each team was flagged twice for offsides.

Bailey Bosler started in goal for the Pioneers and played 70 minutes, making eight saves. Hannah Graham saw action for the final 20 minutes and registered a pair of stops. For Columbus State, Bria Riancho finished the match with one save.

The Pioneers will close the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 27 at Coker beginning at 1 p.m., before opening the SAC Championship tournament next Tuesday, Oct. 30 with a quarterfinal match.
