Tusculum women's soccer inks 12 on national signing day

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Twelve (12) student-athletes have committed to attend Tusculum College and play soccer for the Pioneers announced TC women's coach Mike Joy.

This year's commitment class includes players representing seven states along with one from France.  The group is comprised of five forwards, four midfielders, two defenders and one goalie.

Coach Joy, the winningest women's soccer coach in Tusculum and South Atlantic Conference history with 296 victories in his 20 seasons in Greeneville, faced the challenge of replacing nine seniors from last year's squad that went 10-5-3 and captured the program's fifth South Atlantic Conference championship.

"One of the needs we had to address was our scoring up front," said Joy. "I expect this group to challenge right away.  We are bringing in players who have great individual statistics and have won state championships, both in high school and club soccer.  This class will compete and knows what championship competition is about. I'm very excited about this group."

The Pioneers did not have to go far to ink one its top choices with the signing of Greeneville High School standout Makenzie Ellenburg. The 5-8 forward led the Greene Devils to back-to-back TSSAA State championships in 2015 and 2016.  During her career, she scored a school record 105 goals, including a GHS record 50 goals and 23 assists in her senior campaign.  She was a two-time Region and District Player of the Year and was also a consensus All-State selection in 2015 and 2016.  Ellenburg earned a spot on the THSSCA East/West All-Star Team and was a four-time All-District and three-time All-Region performer for former TC head coach and Sports Hall of Famer John Eiskamp.  During her GHS career, she helped her squad to an impressive 86-15 record.
