Alabama-Huntsville scores twice in second half for 2-0 win over Tusculum

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. --- Alexcia Alexander scored two second-half goals to lift the University of Alabama in Huntsville to a 2-0 victory over Tusculum College Sunday afternoon in non-conference women's soccer action at Charger Park.

Alexander scored in the 53rd and 82nd minutes as the Chargers (3-1-0) limited the Pioneers (2-2-1) to four shots on goal in the contest. Larae Breaux recorded the shutout in goal for UAH and also assisted on Alexander's second goal with just over eight minutes remaining.

Tusculum had the early edge in play, registering three shots in the first eight minutes including a header by Payton DeHart that was stopped by Breaux. The Chargers came back with three unanswered shots of their own, but Pioneer keeper Miriah Martin made a pair of saves.

DeHart nearly gave Tusculum a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute, but her shot went off the crossbar. Carly Mill had the only other shot on goal in the first half, but her header was saved by Breaux in the 26th minute.

The Chargers took the lead at 52:58 as Alexander took a shot from the top left corner of the box that went off the right post and in, giving Alabama-Huntsville a 1-0 lead. The Chargers followed the goal with five unanswered shots, but could not add to their advantage.

Tusculum nearly tied the score in the 60th minute, but Haley Klages' shot attempt ricocheted off the post. Klages had another scoring opportunity in the 67th minute, but Breaux made the stop to keep the Chargers lead at 1-0.

Alexander picked up her second goal of the game just seconds after returning to the field in the 82nd minute. A goal kick by Breaux was played by Alexander and deposited into the goal at 81:51 for a 2-0 UAH lead. The Pioneers had one more scoring attempt in the contest, but a shot by DeHart was turned away by Breaux just two minutes after Alexander's second goal of the match.

The Chargers finished the match with a 16-10 advantage in shots, while both teams had three corner kicks. Both Breaux and Martin ended the contest with four saves.

Tusculum returns home to play their South Atlantic Conference opener on Wednesday at 5 p.m. against Queens University of Charlotte at Pioneer Field.
