Tusculum College senior midfielder Monica Perez was among three
Pioneers named All-South Atlantic Conference in Women's soccer, the
league office announced Wednesday.
Perez, a first-team selection, was joined on the team by a pair of
honorable mention picks in senior defender Amy Morford and junior
goalkeeper Marissa Williams. Together, the trio led the Pioneers to
a 9-6-3 regular-season record and third place in the final SAC
standings with a 7-2-2 conference mark.
Perez, a second-team All-SAC selection in 2011, recorded a goal and
four assists for six points in 18 regular-season matches. The
Austin, Texas native shared the team lead in assists and was one of
three players to start all 18 contests for the Pioneers. A
four-year starter, Perez entered the postseason with one goal and
eight assists for nine points in 74 career matches.
Williams earned a spot on the team after compiling a 9-6-3 record
with a stellar 0.83 goals against average and a league-best 10
shutouts during the regular season. The Canton, Mich. product
posted an .842 save percentage and had streaks of five and four
consecutive matches with a shutout. In 11 SAC matches, Williams led
the conference in goals against average (0.52), save percentage
(.878) and shutouts (eight) while playing all 1,030 minutes in
net.
Williams posted her 11th shutout of the season in a 1-0 victory
over Queens in a Food Lion SAC Tournament quarterfinal match on
Tuesday night, moving her within one of the school single-season
record of 12 shutouts set by Whitney Wardrop in 2006. Her 25 career
shutouts are a program record, and she also ranks among the
school's career leaders in saves and goals against average.
Morford was the anchor of a Pioneer defense that allowed six or
fewer shots on goal in 12 of the last 13 matches and held the
opposition to fewer than 10 shots attempts a total of seven times.
The Versailles, Ky. native started 17 matches and shared the team
lead with four assists, all coming on corner kicks. In her career,
Morford has participated in 31 shutouts in 70 matches for the
Pioneers.
Wingate's Jade Montgomery repeated as the SAC Player of the Year,
with Freshman of the Year honors going to Caitlyn Rodrigues of
Queens. Cally Morrill of Lenoir-Rhyne was honored as Coach of the
Year for the second consecutive season after leading the Bears to
their fourth straight conference title.
Tusculum will play Wingate at 7 p.m. Friday in the Food Lion SAC
Tournament semifinals at Manchester Meadows in Rock Hill, S.C.
