The Tusculum College Women's soccer team wrapped up its regular
season with a 2-0 victory at Newberry College in a South Atlantic
Conference Women's soccer match Saturday afternoon.
Carly Whitman and Taylor Lewis scored goals and Marissa Williams
made three saves for her fourth consecutive shutout and 10th of the
year for the Pioneers (9-6-3, 7-2-2 SAC), who clinched the third
seed in next week's Food Lion SAC Tournament with their fourth
straight victory.
Newberry (9-8-0, 5-6-0 SAC) outshot Tusculum by an 11-9 margin, but
Williams came up with yet another shutout for the Pioneers. The
junior extended her own school career record with her 24th shutout
and moved within two of the program single-season record of 12
shutouts set in 2006 by Whitney Wardrop.
Whitman, the reigning SAC Player of the Week, scored her second
goal of the season at 10:34 as she put home a loose ball following
a corner kick from Amy Morford. The lead stood until halftime as
each team finished with five shots in the first half.
The Pioneers extended their lead to 2-0 at 54:22 as Lewis finished
off a cross from Monica Perez for her team-high sixth goal of the
season. Nikki Arthur was also credited with an assist on the goal.
Williams protected the lead as she made a pair of saves on headers
from the Wolves' Breanna Naranjo in the final 10 minutes.
Newberry keeper Rebecca Darley finished with one save in goal, as
both teams put three shots on goal in the match. Tusculum had a 4-3
advantage in corner kicks, while Newberry was whistled for nine
fouls to six by the Pioneers.
Tusculum will host sixth-seeded Queens in a Food Lion SAC
Tournament quarterfinal match Tuesday at Pioneer Field. Game time
will be announced by the conference office later this weekend.
