Gabrielle Whitt scored in the 32nd minute and Marissa Williams
became Tusculum College's career leader in shutouts as the Pioneers
defeated Lincoln Memorial University 1-0 in South Atlantic
Conference Women's soccer action Wednesday evening at a chilly
Pioneer Field.
Williams made five saves for the 21st shutout of her career,
breaking a tie with Jennie Murphy for the most in program history.
She preserved the whitewash as time expired, smothering a shot from
the Railsplitters' Olivia Thompson after she got behind the defense
in the closing seconds.
Whitt gave the Pioneers (6-6-3, 4-2-2 SAC) all the offense they
would need at 31:28 as she took a through pass from Carly Whitman
and chipped a shot past Railsplitter keeper Kayla Stephens for her
first goal of the season.
The Railsplitters (7-6-1, 5-4-0 SAC) had a 19 mile-per-hour wind at
their backs in the second half and fired eight shots at the Pioneer
goal, but Williams came through with three saves in the half. For
the match, Lincoln Memorial finished with a 13-4 shot advantage
over Tusculum.
In addition to its lead in shots, Lincoln Memorial had a 5-2 edge
in corner kicks over Tusculum in the match. Stephens finished with
one save in goal for the Railsplitters.
The Pioneers are home Sunday at 1 p.m. against Coker College in a
South Atlantic Conference match at Pioneer Field. Sunday's match
will be Senior Day and Wall of Fame Day for Tusculum, as five
seniors will be honored before the match along with two new
inductees into the Wall of Fame.
