Two goals in a span of less than four minutes midway through the
first half allowed UNC Pembroke to erase an early 1-0 deficit and
defeat Tusculum College 2-1 in a non-conference Women's soccer
match Monday afternoon.
Sara Lundberg and Amber Watkins each had a goal and an assist in
the win for the Braves (6-6-0), while freshman Kelli McCalla scored
her first career goal in the third minute for the Pioneers (5-5-3),
who dropped their second consecutive match.
McCalla scored at 2:30 off a feed from Amy Neltner to give Tusculum
the early lead, and Monica Perez nearly made it 2-0 Pioneers in the
21st minute but her shot was knocked away by the Braves defense
near the goal line.
UNC Pembroke's Lundberg took a pass from Watkins and beat the
defense for her fourth goal of the season at 22:18 to even the
match at 1-1. Lundberg and Rae-Shawna Campbell helped set up
Watkins for the go-ahead goal at 26:09 to push the Braves on top
2-1.
Tusculum's best sustained pressure in the second half came in a
flurry of three shots in a span of 30 seconds in the 57th minute,
but Braves keeper Claire Tracy made one save, the defense blocked
another shot and a third attempt went wide of the goal.
After holding a 9-6 advantage in shots in the first half, the
Pioneers were matched in the shot column by the Braves in the
second half at six apiece. Tusculum had three shots off their seven
corner kicks in the match, but were unable to put any of the
attempts on goal.
Pioneer keeper Marissa Williams finished with four saves in the
match, while Tracy had a pair of stops for the Braves.
Tusculum will resume its South Atlantic Conference schedule on
Saturday when it plays at league-leading Lenoir-Rhyne at 5 p.m. in
Hickory, N.C.
