Juliana Conte recorded a goal and an assist as Catawba College
defeated Tusculum College 2-0 in a South Atlantic Conference
Women's soccer match Saturday evening.
Mary Kirkman scored a second-half goal for the Indians (6-5-1,
3-3-1 SAC), who outshot the Pioneers (5-4-3, 3-1-2 SAC) by a 17-7
margin to snap Tusculum's six-match unbeaten streak.
Conte's goal at the 2:58 mark of the first half off a cross from
Allison Baucom gave Catawba a 1-0 lead, and the Indians carried the
advantage through to halftime behind a 14-1 advantage in shots over
the Pioneers.
Following some early pressure to start the second half from
Tusculum, Catawba picked up its second goal of the game at 52:19 as
Conte fed Kirkman for her fifth goal of the season. The Pioneers'
best scoring chance came with 8:56 left when Monica Perez took a
penalty kick, but Indians keeper Bethany Davis made the save to
preserve the shutout.
Davis finished with four saves in goal for the Indians, while
Marissa Williams finished with three stops for the Pioneers. Both
teams took four corner kicks and were flagged once apiece for
offsides in the match.
The Pioneers will be on the road Monday at 5 p.m. for a key
Southeast Regional match at UNC Pembroke.
