Thombs nets a pair in Pioneers? 3-1 win at Brevard
Box score BREVARD, N.C. ---

Jenique Thombs scored a pair of goals as Tusculum College extended its unbeaten streak to six matches with a 3-1 win at Brevard College in a South Atlantic Conference Women's soccer match Wednesday afternoon.

Thombs celebrated her birthday by scoring in the 8th and 65th minutes for the Pioneers (5-3-3, 3-0-2 SAC), who have four wins and two draws in their last six contests. Taylor Lewis also scored for Tusculum, which finished the match with a 14-8 shot advantage over Brevard (3-6-1, 0-4-1 SAC).

It took just 7:33 for the Pioneers to take a 1-0 lead as Thombs blasted home the first goal of the afternoon from 10 yards, and Nikki Arthur nearly gave the Pioneers a 2-0 lead at 16:03 but her shot rang off the crossbar.

The Tornados came back to level the score at 1-1 on a goal at 26:39 from Sarah Fonger. The goal snapped a scoreless streak of 522 minutes, 47 seconds by Tusculum goalkeeper Marissa Williams, who had recorded five consecutive shutouts since last allowing a goal on Sept. 15 to Tampa.

Just under five minutes later, the Pioneers regained the lead when Lewis headed home a corner kick from Amy Morford for her third goal of the season and a 2-1 Tusculum edge at 31:37. The Pioneers nursed the lead to intermission and headed to the sidelines with a 9-3 shot advantage to go along with the one-goal spread.

After some early second-half pressure from the Tornadoes, Thombs gave the Pioneers insurance at 64:11 when she took a feed from Monica Perez and blasted a shot past Brevard keeper Brittany Webster for her second of the day and third of the season. Tusculum's defense took over from there, not permitting a shot on goal by Brevard for the final 26 minutes of the match.

Williams finished with four saves for the Pioneers, as did Webster for the Tornados. Both teams took four corner kicks in the match and Tusculum was called for 10 fouls to seven by Brevard.

The Pioneers will play the second of four straight road matches on Saturday at 5 p.m. at Catawba.
