A goal in each half gave ninth-ranked University of Tampa a 2-0
victory over Tusculum College in action at the CSU Collegiate
Invitational Women's soccer tournament, played Sunday morning at
Columbus State University.
The Spartans (5-0-0) outshot the Pioneers (1-3-1) by a 15-2 margin,
sending Tusculum to its third consecutive loss. The Pioneers lost
2-0 to the host Cougars in Friday night's opening round of action
at the tournament.
Tampa got on the board at the midway point of the first half when
Candice Shields put home a shot from 30 yards out at 22:29,
assisted by Audrey Hayward. The Spartans outshot the Pioneers 6-2
in the half, as shots from Tusculum's Taylor Lewis and Nikki Arthur
were saved by keeper Kori Butterfield.
In the second half, Tampa put on the pressure in the final 20
minutes and finally cashed in with 6:08 left on an own goal to
double their advantage to 2-0. The Spartans had all nine shots in
the second half.
Marissa Williams finished with eight saves in goal for the
Pioneers, while Butterfield played the first 59 minutes before
giving way to Katherine Marting for the final 31 minutes for the
Spartans.
The Pioneers open South Atlantic Conference play on Wednesday at 5
p.m. at Queens University of Charlotte, as they attempt to give
head coach Mike Joy his 300th career victory.
