Ananda Gebreyesus scored a pair of goals to boost Belmont Abbey
College to a 3-1 victory over Tusculum College in a non-conference
Women's soccer match Tuesday evening at Pioneer Field.
Jillian Lang also scored in the opening 90 seconds for the
Crusaders (2-0-0), who built a 3-0 lead before the Pioneers (1-1-1)
got on the board in the 85th minute on a goal by Jenique
Thombs.
The loss was the first in regulation at home for the Pioneers in
just over two years, since a 2-1 loss to 16th-ranked Columbus State
on Sept. 4, 2011. Since that loss, Tusculum had won 10 consecutive
home matches that ended after 90 minutes and were 11-2-3 overall on
Pioneer Field.
The Crusaders wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard as
Lang netted the opening goal on the first shot of the match,
beating Pioneer keeper Marissa Williams for a 1-0 Belmont Abbey
lead after just 1:20 of action.
Gebreyesus doubled the lead at 31:42 as she controlled the ball to
the middle of the field, then fired home a shot to the far post at
31:42 for a 2-0 Belmont Abbey lead on their second shot of the
evening.
Just under six minutes into the second half, Gebreyesus struck
again as she redirected a service from Mariah Meuse for her second
goal of the night and a 3-0 Belmont Abbey lead.
Tusculum had two excellent scoring chances early in the second
half, including a shot by Taylor Lewis that was cleared away from
the line by Belmont Abbey defender Megan Nanney. Thombs finally
broke the drought at 84:16 as she took a pass from Lewis and put
home a turnaround shot to trim the final margin to 3-1. Tusculum
finished the match outshooting Belmont Abbey 12-8 and had an 8-1
advantage in corner kicks.
Williams played the first half for the Pioneers and made one save
before giving way to freshman Miriah Martin in the second half, who
had four stops in her collegiate debut. Hannah Kohls started for
the Crusaders and made one save in 71:49 before being sent off on a
red card for a hard foul on Lewis outside the box. Abby Walton
finished up and registered three saves.
The Pioneers will again attempt to give head coach Mike Joy his
300th career win on Friday night when the Pioneers battle Columbus
State in the CSU Collegiate Invitational, starting at 7 p.m.
