Young Harris defeats Pioneers in non-conference matchup

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. --- Ten different players scored goals as Young Harris College defeated Tusculum University 21-5 in non-conference women's lacrosse action Tuesday evening.

Mary Deatrick scored a game-high four goals, Ansley Coles scored three times and Erika Cross had two goals and four assists for the Mountain Lions (4-4), who led 17-3 at halftime and had a 25-21 edge in shots over the Pioneers (1-7) in the match.

Juliette Cusano and Rachel Holmes led the Pioneers with two goals apiece and Emily Youngblood also scored for Tusculum.

Joining Cross with two goals apiece for Young Harris were Hayley Bartlett (three assists), Leigh Anne Turner and Maddie Peek (two assists apiece), Sierra Haas (one assist) and Taylor Greenberg. Channing Milford and Anna Luckie each had a goal for the Mountain Lions.

Cross opened the scoring 51 seconds into the first quarter for Young Harris, but Cusano responded with her first goal of the game just 10 seconds later. The Mountain Lions then ran off 11 straight goals in a span of 18 minutes before Holmes and Youngblood scored back-to-back to break the run. Young Harris then scored the last five goals of the first half to carry a 17-3 lead into intermission.

Holmes and Cusano scored the first two goals of the second half for the Pioneers to cut the margin to 17-5, but Tusculum went scoreless for the final 18 1/2 minutes as Young Harris tallied the final four goals of the afternoon.

Cusano and Youngblood each had five draw controls to lead the Pioneers, while Holmes had a team-high four ground balls and Cusano added three. For the Mountain Lions, Deatrick had a team-high four draw controls and two caused turnovers, with Cross contributing a game-high three caused turnovers.

Tusculum goalkeepers Kate Pipkin and Taylor Floyd had one save apiece for the Pioneers, while Rachel Robb had five saves in 54 minutes of playing time for the Mountain Lions.

The Pioneers will host Lees-McRae in a non-conference match on Thursday at 5 p.m. at Pioneer Field.
