HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. --- The Tusculum University women's golf team opened with a team score of 318 and is a shot out of the lead following day one action of the 2021 Battle at Hilton Head.
The two-day, 36-hole tournament is being held on the par-72, 5,934-yard Robert Trent Jones Course at the Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort.
Tusculum and Central Missouri are both one stroke behind first-round leader Carson-Newman, who posted a team tally of 317.
Lenoir-Rhyne is fourth with 320, followed by Belmont Abbey (321), Columbus State (329), Lee University (330), Lander (334), Catawba (335), Queens (336), Lincoln Memorial (336), USC Beaufort (344), Southern Wesleyan (345) and Barton (346).
TU's Jennifer Keim fired a four-over par 76 and is tied for third place and one shot behind co-leaders Maeve Cummins of Carson-Newman and Belmont Abbey's Jenna Nagy, who each shot 75.
Keim's round included two birdies, two bogeys, two double bogeys and 11 pars for her opening day performance. The Tusculum duo of Nilubol Panno and Hannah Brown are tied for 11th place as both posted scores of 79. Olivia Cunningham is 32nd with 84, while Madison DeWees carded an 87 and is 51st.
Of the 14-team tournament field, five are either ranked or receiving votes in this week's WGCA / NCAA Division II Poll. Lee University is ranked sixth in the nation while Central Missouri, Carson-Newman, Lander and LMU are receiving votes in the poll.
The final round of The Battle of Hilton Head will be held on Tuesday.
