Tusculum takes first day lead at Mars Hill Invitational

FLETCHER, N.C. --- The Tusculum University women's golf team posted shot 302 to take the first round lead at the 2018 Mars Hill University Invitational.

The TU trio of Katie Tomassoni, Cydney Murrell and Olivia Cunningham each shot 75 and are locked in a five-way logjam for second place.  Brevard College's Taylor Scovel posted the low round of the day with a two-over par 74.

The two-day, 36-hole event is being held at the par-72, 5,841-yard Broadmoor Golf Links, which serve as the venue for this spring's South Atlantic Conference Championship.

The Pioneers have a four-stroke lead over Newberry College (306) and are eight shots clear of Lincoln Memorial University (310).  Host Mars Hill is fourth with 329, followed by Montreat College (338), Southern Virginia University (370), Pfeiffer University (395) and Columbia College (479).

Rookie Julia Johansson posted a 77 and is tied for eighth place while senior Taylor White carded an 80 and is tied for 15th place.

Tusculum's 302 is tied for the ninth-lowest 18-hole team score in program history.  The Pioneers are going for its second team title of the season after winning the Bob Dibble Classic earlier this month.

The final round will begin at 8 a.m. on Tuesday morning with a shotgun start.
