ELGIN, S.C. --- The Tusculum women's golf team fired an opening round score of 316 and are in second place after day one of the 2018 South Atlantic Conference Championship. The three-day, 54-hole tournament is being held at The Members Club at Woodcreek.
The Pioneers are four shots out of the lead currently held by 15th-ranked Wingate who carded a team score of 312.
Tusculum was paced by junior Cydney Murrell's three-over par score of 75 and shares the first round lead with Cameryn Smith of Queens.
Anderson is in third place in the team competition with 317 while Lincoln Memorial and Queens are tied for fourth place with 323. Lenoir-Rhyne is sixth with 327, followed by Coker and Carson-Newman who are locked in a tie for seventh place. Newberry is ninth with 333, followed by Catawba (338) and Mars Hill (379) to round out the scoring
Murrell bogeyed her opening hole but followed with nine straight pars and went to even par for her round with a birdie on the 11th hole. She posted back-to-back bogeys on No. 12 and No. 13 but finished with pars on four of her final five holes.
TC junior Katie Tomassoni is tied for sixth place with her six-over par 78 as she carded a 41 on her opening nine but bounced back with a one-over par 37 on her inward nine including a birdie on the 12th hole.
Junior Taylor White is tied for 14th place after shooting 80 which included a birdie on the seventh hole. Senior Ciarra Rattana carded an 83 and is tied for 25th place while freshman Mackenzie Butler shot 94 and is 51st
The second round will be held Monday afternoon followed by Tuesday's final round.
